Two items from Alan Edwards’ new book:
Today (4 July) is the anniversary of his Lordship’s first-class debut century – in 1913 for MCC v Oxford University at Lord’s. No one has ever achieved this for Hampshire. Exactly eight years later he scored a half century batting one-handed against Australia at Leeds. It was his first match as England’s captain, he had injured his hand in the field and the bat he used is still on display at the Ageas Bowl (Atrium walkway).
And since, by association, we are invoking the spirit of Victorian writers, today is the 150th anniversary of the first telling of the tale of Alice in Wonderland. See:
