Balcombe wins for Surrey

Yesterday’s fourth day may have been a bit dull but there was a cracker at the Ageas Bowl today. Sean Terry scored a century this morning and the combined Hampshire & Kent 2nd XI set Surrey 317 to win in around 60 overs. I was busy on Archive stuff but kept nipping out to have a look and at around 5.45 I went over to find Surrey 268-6 with 8 overs left

*Ball (Kent) was bowling at one end and at the other Barber took a wicket which brought David Balcombe in at 273-7. With the help of a few extras, in no time he smashed 25* and won the game with three overs and a bit to spare – and all this in beautiful sunshine.

I hope (some of) you enjoyed the headline …

PS Talking of headlines, on the cricket pages tomorrow I’m anticipating “Surrey 2nd XI win without Pietersen”

Ball, Barber and Bilk what a line-up! Only one of these jazz greats is still alive, and celebrated his 85th birthday last week? Arguably the greatest of the three.

Well done Peter – and I agree, CB one of the UK’s most influential musicians, jazz, blues and skiffle!
