A long hard day – not least for the frozen supporters! Alex Hales batted superbly.

I can only agree regarding Hales. I had always regarded him (probably totally wrongly) as little more than a good hitter but he really built an innings today and looked totally in command. I see he has now reached 500 first-class runs for the season but I suspect the news will be more about the unwanted South African than him.

Almost certainly James – but encouraging to see England’s batsmen scoring runs so no need to change there while the second division batsman managed only 32 today while most of his colleagues made more.

Meanwhile in the first three matches Hampshire have conceded three centuries – while tomorrow is Day Ten, and so far no time lost to weather I think …
