Bird J

One of the least surprising bits of news of 2015 is that Jackson Bird is flying home for treatment and Fidel Edwards should arrive next week in his place – presumably to start at Headingley. There’s a suggestion that Bird might return but I wonder. Anyway this photo will provide a good quiz question in 20 years time: Who was no. 22?

It begs the question – do county cricketers undertake any form of medical before joining, particularly as in this case it appears Bird had an injury history. This situation reeks of a good degree of unprofessionalism on Hants’ account.

The club’s site says that Edwards may be available from the middle of May. However the Echo is reporting that he is off to play in the Caribbean Premier League from June 20th to July 26th.

It also reports that Yasir Arafat, who I seem to recall was touted as being available in all forms of cricket should Bird be unavailable, now only wants to play limited overs cricket.

So with Andre Adams only here for three months it seems our bowling attack is going to get even weaker!

I think this is all correct. I heard today that Arafat only wants to play limited overs. Edwards will come, go and then come again. He’s a Kolpak so we can still sign an overseas bowler – if we can find one.

Incidentally Brad Wheal took seven wickets for the 2nd XI today (although 21 wickets fell in the day!)
