Bob Murrell tells me today is our first meeting with them designated as first-class. I am pretty sure it is – I believe the ECB has agreed that any University match v a county that begins on a Monday and also an even number day is first-class while anything starting on a Thursday with an R in the month is a minor game

Or something like that

Anyway he has also provided me with a set of records between the two sides, albeit not first-class (please refer to above). I’m intrigued to see that our BB (innings & match) was by a promising youngster called S Warne, our highest ever total was 504-8dec in 2007 while one of record partnerships was between James Hibberd and Mitchell Stokes. Among the Cardiff records is an 8th wicket partnership featuring Mitch Claydon, who was playing here last week for Kent.

Oh yes, and our 8th wicket record is shared by a Sussex left-armer and that bloke Brathwaite

Lets hope its more competitive than last week’s University games i.e. Essex beat Cambridge MCCU by 523 runs, Worcs beat Oxford MCCU by 482 runs – this is hardly first-class opposition.

But Loughborough did well against Surrey

Let’s hope. They will need to do better than 2007. In that match we put out full or nearly so first team of Adams, Brown, Crawley, Lumb, Benham, Pothas, Ervine, Mascarenhas, Warne, Bruce, Tomlinson. Scores. H 375-5d and 504-8d, C 120 and 153. H won by 610 runs. In the current match Hampshire won’t be at full strength as no Vince, Dawson or Topley. They should still be too strong for Cardiff though, weather permitting. CricketArchive ref number for the 2007 match is misc12899.

Have just looked at the Hampshire team. Is it the youngest Hampshire have ever put out in a first-class match? 7 players 21 or younger.

Whilst you’re checking records Bob could I ask you a quick question please. A Somerset guy has asked me if Gayle’s 8 sixes in the T20 innings last season was a record against Hampshire? Can you help please? Cheers

Hi Richard

Not something I have record of (but may be I should). Quick check on CricketArchive back to 2010 shows 8 is the most, by Gayle and also, subsequently by Jesse Ryder for Essex at Chelmsford. Before that 7 by Trescothick in 2010 at Taunton. Best for Hampshire looks to be 6 by a few players. I will work on it.
