2016: Targets and Achievements

I’m hoping that Bob M, ‘Tigger’ and indeed anyone else, is keeping an eye on me but here’s what I think is happening or looming this year at Hampshire in first-class cricket

James Vince starts as official captain in everything at 25 years and one month. Only two men have ever started younger, Dick Moore in 1936 was 22 and about six months and in 1958, Colin Ingleby-Mackenzie was 24 and seven+ months.

Here are some figures for Hampshire and/or in all first-class cricket for players who might reach milestones this year:

Jimmy Adams has 11,893 runs in all f/c cricket, while Michael Carberry has 9,494 for Hampshire and 12,833 in all f/c. Liam Dawson has 4, 871 runs and 99 wickets for Hampshire and Ryan McLaren has 348 wickets in all f/c cricket. Similarly, Chris Wood has 96 wickets for Hampshire, while Adam Wheater has 1910 runs for Hampshire and overall 149 dismissals in all f/c cricket.

So I’m predicting the first dismissal tomorrow will be st. Wheater b. Dawson – two birds/one stone and the first opening day wicket for a slow-left-armer since Danny Briggs (remember him?).

I’ll bet one thing – Wheater won’t emulate Adi Aymes, who in 1992 took Hampshire’s second first-class wicket of the season!
