Here I am then, all scrubbed up and relevant because  although you probably can’t see it, I’m wearing Sean Ervine’s Benefit Bow Tie – maybe the first person to wear one at Lord’s?

Me Wisden MCC 4 2016.jpg

There was a fine speech by the writer Kamila Shamsie who has played for the Authors’ XI. She suggested that cricket is neither a batters’ nor bowlers’ game  but belongs to the spectator – adding “The role of the spectator is an honourable one”. Lovely …

Not my finest pic (‘phone’ shot) but this is Kamila in the Long Room. I never discovered the name of the man (right) with long hair but he’s obscuring Jonny Bairstow one of the five Cricketers of the Year. Centre is Jonny’s wife/partner and she in turn is obscuring Angus Fraser. To her left is Jonny’s mum (David’s widow) and in front with glasses Vic Marks. Also there, Doug Insole, Roger Knight, Richard Ellison, John Stephenson, Alan Butcher, Mike Atherton and (briefly) ‘our’ Simon Jones.

(It was incidentally ‘Black Tie but neither Atherton nor Jones managed that!)

Not our briefly John Stephenson then?

Comment by Paul

Quite right Paul and well spotted – although not that brief in John’s case. Simon stayed two seasons and played 22 matches, of which 14 were T20. John did not have a particularly happy time with us, but he played 93 first-class and 117 limited-overs games in seven seasons.
