It’s tough

up north, tha knows

It’s been like midsummer in Costa Pompey but a late start at Headingley for frost (!) and an early finish for darkness means another 20 overs lost today, in addition to about 120 last week. Maybe a draw is possible

I forgot to mention that Liam Dawson’s wicket v Warwicks was his 100th first-class for Hants. This evening Chris Wood has 2-54 which takes him to 98 first-class for Hants. Let’s hope he reaches his ‘ton’ in his first over tomorrow

I’m off to Hove for the day to check out the England captain’s helmet and Danny Briggs’ batting.

Jo has just alerted me to the fact that we’ve lost a point for a slow over rate v Warwickshire. Sadly I think it was well deserved and it should be more common, until all counties bowl a decent rate.

Comment by Dave Allen

Interestingly, four of the six first division counties that played in the first round of matches last week were docked a point each, including Warwickshire.
Perhaps umpires have been told to crack down.
Thanks to Alsop and Smith we are not behind the rate for the Yorkshire first innings

Were they? That isn’t showing in the tables on the BBC website…….the only team with a deduction on there is Hampshire

Comment by joster69

Jo – see the full Cricinfo table below. It wasn’t showing even our deduction immediately after the game. Last year points went up quickly after a game, deductions appeared a day or two later, presumably after an umpires’ report. Perhaps the table you saw was published after our match report but before others were received by ECB. Bad though – deductions ought all go on at the same time

Jo also made a comment on Twitter about Dawson being able (or not) to bowl today. Is he damaged?

Comment by pompeypop

Sorry……only just seen this……guessing that you have listened to KJs interview with DB so now know that sadly he is

236 in the morning session. I gets tougher . .
Dawson and Woody incapacitated, 9 bowlers so far!
Plunkett now got a 100. Crikey!

Comment by Bob Elliott

Yorkshire have declared on 593-9 which beats their previous highest against Hampshire of 585-3 in 1920.

Comment by Tigger Miles

Interesting – I wonder if that’s why they somewhat surprisingly batted on when Plunkett was out at 575-8, gifting us a bonus point?

Comment by Jeremy

Too late for a bonus point wasn’t it, James. They stop at 110 overs.

Comment by Bob Elliott

Quite right – I hadn’t realised Yorkshire were scoring so slowly 😉 !

So our noble 22 have conceded 723 today – hopefully that’s a record?

Comment by Jeremy

2nds up against it too. Surrey 300+ for 4 when I left.

Comment by Bob Elliott

Update – 400-4

Comment by Bob Elliott

and in reply we are 35-6!

Comment by James

45-7 at close.

Comment by James

So Hampshire today,
318-4 & 400-4 = 718-8 by our two opponents &
141-5 & 45-7 = 186-12 by our two sides.

I guess we lost today.
