New Balls Please

It seems that like the weather, things are ok today but it might be hard work for the bowlers …

If we assume that the new ball ‘works’ for about 25/30 overs then in Hampshire’s matches so far (inc yesterday) and in the innings of both sides, a wicket has fallen every 6.8 overs with the first new ball and after that, every 15 overs – and that even includes second new balls, like the one that did for us in this match

“Funnily enough” that seems to imply an average innings length of 97 overs – almost exactly what 4 day 96 over cricket needs to get a result, given no loss of play.

If the bulk of the Champo is to be played in April May and September, as 60% of it is already, maybe we need more credit for creating “winning” positions the weather ruins?

Good point – do you mean “credit” in terms of extra points? Interesting idea. A quick thought – change bonus points to average runs per over and overs per wicket throughout both innings, thereby rewarding scoring and strike rates …

Yes, I had points in mind… not exactly sure how though.

Setting 400 as a target, irrespective of pitch, weather conditions seems very encouraging of bland pitches… from your Collingwood pitch quote a while back, I wonder how many April September even May pitches have EVER met his criteria?!

And possibly Woody out for a while with the knee injury that forced him off again today. Off to see a specialist tomorrow according to Kevan James.

Perhaps we could re-sign Kevin Shine for Old Trafford?
