Congratulations to James – now we need a new captain!

J Vince

This is the first photo I ever took of him and you can see from the logos (and the youthful expression) it was some years ago. He’d just scored a century for the 2nd XI – I think it was a pre-season friendly against a fairly strong Sussex attack

If things go well for him, in just a couple of years he could be the most-capped, English-born Hampshire cricketer in Test Matches for England. Mead with 17 and Gower with 11 (while at HCCC) are the only two in double figures – otherwise it’s a couple of South Africans (and I’ve always considered Gordon Greenidge one of ours).

PS He’s also the third official Hampshire captain (and the first ‘pro’) to be selected, after ‘Teddy’ Wynyard and Lionel Tennyson, although others including Mead, Gower and Udal have captained on occasions.

Before the beard! Well done James Vince and Liam Dawson in the performance squad

Comment by Paul

Yes well done Liam – my preference for ‘skipper’ to deputise for JV – if he’ll do it.

Reece Topley is in the Performance Squad as well.

Apologies and well done to Reece, I missed him.

do we have an official vice-captain?

Comment by Ian Laidlaw

In the pre season and Uni game Smith and Ervine captained the side. Is Ervine injured?

Comment by Paul

Ervine has an injured finger I believe Paul.

Comment by James

That’s correct. Not too serious, nothing on it but not able to play this week. I’d guess he’ll be fit for the Notts game but it is a guess.
