There are moments in life that remind us we’re supposed to enjoy cricket – whether players or supporters. Losing a cricket match is never a tragedy  but some cricket matters are, and this morning Hampshire have had to announce the death of Hamza Ali who was just starting out on a professional career

You may recall that I posted this photo previously, after meeting him during the early season match against Cardiff University. He was from Bristol and made his Hampshire debut in that match which was first-class, so his name will appear on the Cricketers’ Board in the Atrium, when updated at the end of this season (number 538). He had played a couple of games for the 2nd XI and I believe was joining the MCC Young Cricketers. Hampshire Cricket have posted a tribute:

That is dreadful news. A lovely lad who had time to speak to us ‘Second XI groupies’. When I got Hamza to ‘sign his number’ he didn’t know about the Board in the Atrium. The next day he asked me when his name would be added, and looked really disappointed when I told him it would not be up there till next year. Now he will never see it. How very sad.
