Happy (Royal) Birthday

Since I was a kid, I’ve never really understood the idea that Her Majesty has a birthday in June – maybe it’s to fool the astrologers? Today is however the real birthday of the Duke of Edinburgh who’s had his involvement with Hampshire cricket over the decades. Hampshire’s 1973 Champions were the first to visit Buckingham Palace to receive the trophy from the Duke and that photo is quite well known – in one he’s having fun with Peter Sainsbury.

He also led his own team against Hampshire at Bournemouth in 1949. I have posted some photos of this before but here’s a new one, showing the teams lining up to be presented:

There is some Pathé News footage too – mostly it’s of His Royal Highness but there are glimpses of some Hampshire players like Walker & Bailey (and DCS Compton). Happy Birthday Sir!
