Simon Young observes: “With the boys playing T20 in Essex tonight, then home to Gloucestershire just over 12 hours after finishing and 4 days of championship cricket 18 hours after that, I wonder what the reaction would be if professional footballers were asked to fulfil the same obligation!”

(If Roy Hodgson was manager he’d rest most of them!)

Simon makes a very good point. It seems absolutely stupid to me that Hampshire have had nothing to do for four days then have to play six consecutive days, three different games. However there might be quite a few team changes. Sammy plays his final match tomorrow and will presumably then be ‘de-registered’ allowing the return of McLaren on Sunday. ‘ Afridi will play today and tomorrow but not Sunday, Tomlinson and Crane might play in something but not everything. What about Will Smith, really struggling but the captain for the Championship … others?

There have been some VERY interesting changes. No Adams, no Smith, no Wheater while Alsop and Weatherley are batting in the top three and McManus is ‘keeping’. Is Wheater still/again injured?

I note that Wheater is in the squad tomorrow as is Crane (neither playing tonight)
