That “the Seconds are batting, and Liam is playing!”

It’s just a white ball game and knowing Liam he asked to play, but his recent form in Championship cricket hasn’t been great which gives the selectors a headache for Edgbaston. That pitch is the best for bowlers in Division One Championship matches in England this year – one wicket every 8.3 overs. The rest, after yesterday’s games ended:

Old Trafford is 9.45, Trent Bridge 9.46, Ageas Bowl 9.88, Headingley 10.26, the Oval 10.93, Durham 11.19, Taunton 11.5 and at the rear Lord’s 14.16.

Once you get to ten that’s fewer than 10 wickets in a full day. A full game allowing for overs lost through change of innings should be somewhere around 378/380 overs. There have been 39 matches in this year’s Championship and only two have exceeded 350 overs, Durham v Yorkshire (378.2) and Notts v Lancs (360). 21 of the 39 matches have had fewer than 300 overs (approx three days out of four average) and that’s more to do with bad weather than early finishes. 24 of the 39 matches have been drawn – 62%.

Meanwhile James Vince is in the Test squad and apparently playing tomorrow night too. Mike Atherton (The Times) is omitting him from the team however, in favour of a batting Ben Stokes – but bringing him back once Stokes can bowl.

PS Looks certain that Vince will play however, as those changes haven’t occurred:

England squad for first Test against Pakistan: Cook (c), Hales, Root, Vince, Ballance, Bairstow (wk), Moeen, Woakes, Broad, Finn, Ball, Roland-Jones.

Top score so far is 81 by H Dearden. Who? I hear you ask. Well maybe this guy … triallist perhaps?

Hants final total was 281-8 with Mason Crane scoring 35. Noticeable that once again no sign of Ryan Stevenson – I wonder whether he’s unfit again. It appears that Crane & Dawson are the only bowlers today who might be selected on Sunday although Brad Wheal has been with Scotland.

Surrey need 122 to win in 16 overs with five down. D Smith has two cheap wickets. I thought he played for Sussex in the 1950s or maybe Gloucs in the 1960s?

Pillans was unluckily run out (bowler touched it as he was backing up) which led to a bit of a collapse. When I left Surrey were nine down and needed 60 or 70, and the last two started to slog. Assume we won, but . . .

Brad Taylor looked to be hobbling . . .
