Hampshire Cricket History

It’s My Party

(but fortunately nobody cried)

No cricket watching this weekend for me and little news about today’s team except that the Echo suggests that Tino Best will be omitted – if so I’m all for it. He’s entertaining and fun to chat to but apart from the Notts game, a disappointment with very few wickets in recent weeks.

Last night I was having fun in Bournemouth at the 70th Birthday party for Brian Ford who was HCCC’s Chairman back in the 1990s as the Rose Bowl project was completing phase one. His grandfather was Vice Chairman of the club, his father Chairman in the very successful 1970s and Brian spent some decades on the Hampshire Committee and was the man who persuaded Shane Warne to join Hampshire. Brian was on the ECB’s Finance Committee (Chairman?) and met ‘Warnie’ at a Buckingham Palace Reception, floated the idea and signed him back in 2000. Brian is now a VP and (above) still presents a trophy each year named after his mum, Olive – a redoubtable Yorkshire lady – to our most promising youngster,

Last night was a black tie ‘do’. Today by complete contrast, it’s kaftan, beads and bells and a ‘trip’ on my magic swirling ship to Dimbola Lodge IOW to meet up with some pals from the USA who are survivors from the days of Haight Ashbury – including members of Country Joe & the Fish and the Youngbloods (Grandpa Banana – you remember surely?).

Very good Dave – sure enough we got it later as an old folks singalong piece!

Brian F was a prominent participant (the organiser??) of the charity fun runs held around the perimeter of the ground during the cricket weeks at Dean Park. More perspiration than Olympic qualifying standards but it was all done with good humour, not least Brian himself.
