Big Day Looming

You would expect a result in this match with good weather around although wickets are not tumbling. Is this a 48-pointer? Not necessarily. Notts v Somerset means they cannot both win so Hampshire have to look to match Surrey in this game and a big-scoring draw is no disaster – although a defeat might well be. The batting might look a bit ‘iffy’ but Hampshire are fielding a good few batsmen who have scored first-class hundreds so …

(Then there is the major question – will KDJ be fit to resume or will the 12th man be on again?)

What happened to KDJ?

He’s OK now although I thought a bit under the weather still. It’s a bit hot for a day at work with some kind of virus but he stuck to it of course.

While Gary Ballance looked reassuringly solid in contributing 43, James Vince’s streaky 42 was less convincing. As well as being dropped on 9, the result of reaching for a drive well outside off stump, he survived a sliced drive off Yasir that flew just over point and another edge of Wahab that passed between slip and gully.

Though his cover drive is pleasing, his inclination to play it against the swinging ball with limited foot movement is not. He is likely to win another chance at Old Trafford but, bearing in mind he has also dropped four chances (albeit tough ones), he might consider himself fortunate to be playing under the current selection regime.

I Wonder what the coaches at Hampshire are doing given Vince’s documented (well in this blog’s comments) weakness on the drive.

I think Vince has always had problems with shot selection and I’m not really sure anyone can do much about it except him. Advice and encouragement from his coaches would help though.

Is it shot selection or poor footwork ?
