Up-and-down day, tough match but GREAT finish to the day and Hampshire almost level with Surrey on points which is some achievement. After Mason yesterday, it was Lewis’s turn today with terrific help from Brad late on. Let’s hope it’s more than “once in every lifetime”!

There is something I’m beginning to really enjoy about this younger generation – apart from the obvious promise and some achievements already. They seem to me to be very determined and level-headed – I can’t detect a sign of ‘flakiness’ which can sometimes irritate and even limit careers. The first one who seemed to me to show that was Alsop but I reckon it was visible with Crane yesterday, McManus today, Wheal too – and we still have Taylor and Weatherley (plus) to come. Good signs – and to think today’s team contained just three capped players, Adams, Smith and Ervine – only one of whom actually appeared today.
