Hameed.jpg

I remarked a couple of weeks back, how sad it is that the only autograph hunters these days are either older than me or kids with 4/6 cards racing round at T20 games. The next day I took this and forgot to post it – two young men who came for a day of Championship cricket and found the new young Lancashire star Haseeb Hameed more than obliging. He dumped armfuls of practice gear, smiled, signed and seemed generally delightful. He’s also obviously a very fine batsman already

I heard one comment on Sky TV’s Verdict last week that the England selectors might not like him that much because he’s a bit old fashioned and willing to bat all day, rather than smash the ball around for half-an-hour like Hales. It might have been unwarranted speculation but even for such discourse to be part of the current culture is too depressing. The kid looks remarkable.

To be honest he is probably far to good for England!

You may recall my previous comment about the age players get into the England test team. I would suggest that he is about the right age. The say that if you are good enough you are old enough. Considering his current form I would say he is good enough, so at least take him on the winter tours.

Also his 2nd innings ton in the Roses match seemed to belie his previous reputation as an arch blocker so he can clearly adapt his tempo as required–a sign of growing confidence? Looks nailed-on for England in the near future.
