(Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee)

It looks like yet another name and number (544)* on the Board then

Hampshire have David Wainwright (SLA Shropshire, ex-Derbys/Yorks) in the squad of 14 and are talking as though he’ll play because Taunton is turning. So too James Vince & Sean Ervine (perhaps) – but if it’s turning, what about Brad Taylor?

Hampshire have just won their second game of the season but could be about to make three changes. Out go – well we know Dawson, but after him?

*Wainwright will also be their 22nd Championship player, plus Stevenson, Taylor, Sammy and Afridi in the white ball stuff. 26 players in one season is not a record, but excluding a single JPL match for John Rice, it is double the size of their 1973 squad in four competitions.

PS: Forecast looks very dodgy for Thursday. Might need lots of bonus points

Hedgehoppers “It’s a Good News Week” – for the leftovers! If you are a discarded cricketer from the shires, come to Hampshire and we will give you a welcome, after all, we have loads ‘o money to spread around! What the heck is going on at Hampshire?

Comment by John West

Good title John – the band were in the RAF but I believe the singer came from Pompey! And what the heck indeed!

Comment by pompeypop

Thought on David is that he is SLA with a reasonable FC batting average, so more of a like for like replacement for Liam.

Plus, that greater experience in LVCC cricket than Brad, which we may need in the coming days.

Believe that Brad’s ankle may also have flared up again

Thanks Simon – incidentally the ‘Brad’ here is Taylor (not Wheal). We’ve never had two Brads before.

Comment by pompeypop

Incidentally, I was expecting Notts to meet Yorkshire this week with Ball & Broad but Jake is with England covering for Willey and Broad (like our Brad) has a dodgy ankle.

Comment by pompeypop

Brad Taylor that is played for Academy on Saturday and batted and bowled in their 7 wicket lose so does he really have another ankle injury..

Hampshire twitter states that David Wainwright is in the squad for Somerset but completely fails to list the squad and not on main website as too busy with some meaningless ODI..

Comment by John Cottrell

There is a post on Hampshire’s Twitter feed but unfortunately the link to the story on the main website is broken.

Comment by Ageas

They’ve named 14 John – the 10 from Notts (minus Dawson) plus Andrew, Ervine, Vince and Wainwright

Comment by pompeypop

I always thought Wainwright was a very useful cricketer and was surprised when Derbyshire released him mid-season last year. Having said that I’m not entirely sure about the merits of ignoring one of our home produced spin bowling all-rounders for an imported spin bowling all-rounder.

Actually on reflection I am sure about it. It stinks.

Of course there might be a logical reason for it but as our official website doesn’t even seem to acknowledge we have a Championship match starting tomorrow we don’t know do we?

Comment by James

Well Taylor’s injured, so I am unsure who you think is being done down

Comment by Ageas

Rather an unnecessary comment Ageas.

I thought Taylor was being “done down” as I didn’t know he was injured. That is why I said what I did in my last paragraph.

Comment by James

Sorry if offence taken James but Taylor’s injury was mentioned in the third comment on this post

Comment by Ageas

No problem Ageas I missed that but I note that even now the preview has finally appeared on the official website there is no mention of the injury.

It would be so nice if Hampshire Corporate Cricket realised that some of us are interested in the Championship side of things.

Comment by James

It seems that Brad Taylor played for the 2nd XI last week and the Academy on Saturday yet we have two views that he is injured. Where is that information? I can’t find anything on the club website and (unsurprisingly) there is nothing in the local press – at least at my end. If POmpey’s third choice goalkeeper had a stomach upset it would be headline news down here. The issue for me is not so much whether Taylor should be playing as how long I go on giving my unconditional support to a Squad including Andrew, Carter, Wainwright before I decide it’s got very little to do with anything much called ‘Hampshire’. I await with interest the selection today – for me, there’s a point beyond which Div One survival ceases to be the most important issue.

Hear! Hear!

Comment by John West

Pompey have got a third choice goalkeeper? Things must be looking up!

As for today’s selection where on earth is Alsop?

Comment by James

He’s out on loan at Salisbury!

Comment by Paul

Pompey’s goalie not Alsop.

Comment by Paul

An interesting morning at Taunton. How refreshing to hear of the ball turning on the first morning–contrary to Jamo’s whingeing on Radio Solent. Hopefully Ervine can continue to justify replacing Alsop, who must feel aggrieved if not injured or ill.

Comment by Ian White

Mind you, if it’s turning on the first morning, whether we like that or not, they will have to be fined surely? After all, we were.

Comment by pompeypop

Yes I thought that. Is Pigot the inspector for Taunton?

Comment by Paul

Didn’t happen in their last home game where it also started spinning on the first day and the game was all over in the first hour of day 3 with the home spinners taking 17 of the 20 wickets.

It seems the ECB has double standards (which frankly is rather a surprise as I didn’t think they had any standards at all!).

Mind you the spectators there had two days of enthralling cricket whereas we had four days of tedium on an approved ECB wicket.

Comment by James

Smith stays as Captain.
Will Vince be dropped for Alsop in the next game!

Comment by Paul

I’ve been out doing a lunchtime gig, so missed all the news. Has Alsop been dropped? If he has, I think I might finally have stopped caring.

Comment by Dave Allen

I agree it was harsh on Alsop. However, Vince was always going to replace Dawson. Wainwright in for Carter, probably should have been Taylor. Then with Ervine fit again one of Adams, Alsop, Smith or Ervine had to miss out.Tough decision but with Alsop and Smith both making 90 odd in the last match then perhaps it should have been Adams. Ervine again has proved what a valuable player he is.

Comment by Tigger

It was Alsop and Adams who made 90+ in the last game, Smith made 200+ in the game before. It’s part of the culture at Hampshire, when in doubt, leave the youngster out. Happened to Cox, Wood, Kenway etc, to Brad Wheal, the last pace bowler to get a go this season and now the only one with a six-for. It goes on-and-on. Now it happens to Alsop. I was thinking of going tomorrow but I think I’ll be rested

Comment by Dave Allen

Incidentally, I wonder what England think about it? Didn’t they call up Alsop to a squad session recently?

Comment by Dave Allen

He was called into the England Lions squad for the last two matches of the recent one day Tri-Series.

Shouldn’t think it will worry England as it’s “only” Championship cricket!
