Captain Vince

Apparently James Vince needed a match to re-adjust to the squad on his return from England so although Will Smith indicated a willingness to continue, Vince will captain for the rest of the season. With the exception of his century against Yorkshire at Headingley, he’s had a pretty horrid season with the bat but he’s impressed me as captain. He’ll need to be good against Yorkshire, especially if Saturday’s forecast is accurate. If it has to be a draw, it has to be a high points draw and maybe Notts v Durham could be the opposite – or maybe even a low-scoring win for Notts? It’s hard to believe that Warwicks will get sucked into the battle but Lancashire might – They have struggled since losing their international opening bowlers and today they’re home to Somerset.

Who will play today? Perhaps one from Andrew, Carter and Wainwright? In that case presumably Adams and Smith stay as openers, Ervine at three, Vince four, Alsop five?

PS Will Wheater play for Essex – at home to Worcs? And if not …???

PPS Today is Hampshire’s seventh home game of the season with one more to come. Next year this will be the last one.

Just interested – do you know if the Andrew playing for Hampshire is the son/relation of Steve Andrew, the former Hampshire fast bowler? Although I follow cricket and Hampshire via scores and the press I am a little out of touch with the current players.

No relation although they could just about be father and son as they are 50 & 32.

Thanks a lot 🙂

On a different note Gavin Griffifths (on loan) has signed a 2 year contract with Leicestershire from next season.

he seemed quite useful, maybe we’re keeping Carter and Andrew.

Would be surprised if Wainwright is more than a one cap wonder but then it is almost impossible to second guess the side this season.

Wheater is not in the 14 man squad named by Essex for their games this week against Worcs.

No indeed – very odd. It suggests that either they were happy to see him go and/or he was in a hurry to go.

Essex website says he’s in the squad and will be selectable for the next (Glamorgan) game

That must have been added after I looked at the Essex site. Either way he still isn’t in the XI but hopefully we won’t need him

Interesting this morning that Yorkshire, with their excellent attack, were very keen to bat (hence the toss) as batting was not always easy. Meanwhile Vince has missed two catches (one easy, one not). Does he just need a complete break? He’ll probably score 300! Yorkshire’s top five are ALL left-handlers; is that a record?

I was more upset by James Vince’s body language. He really did not look happy out there on day 1.

He looked better batting today and made his second highest first-class score of the season. Maybe that will cheer him up.
