Funny Old Day

Andy Carter on home debut bowls to Jake Lehman on Yorkshire debut. Lehman made a half-century and the day swung back-and-forth with a frustrating end, thanks to ‘one of those’ tenth wicket partnerships, and the bad light (below) which truncated things:

(It was a bit frustrating for me too, since I arrived to do my after tea commentary just as everything went ‘West Midlands’)

Meanwhile elsewhere, Durham started brilliantly yet finished second best to Notts, while Lancashire inserted Somerset and struggled badly until late in the day when they took a few wickets.

Nothing clear in any of those matches yet then. Back tomorrow – and I’m told that (a) the forecast for Saturday is ok now and (b) that the new ball was taken (thanks Jo!)

We did get a stadium announcement but you were all probably chasing solutions to some challenging conditions. Such a shame that the best passage of play wasn’t broadcast 🙄

I’d been practicing all weekend too, just to be at my best!

The umpires did seem very keen to stop play for very little apparent reason. Yes it was a little gloomy but it had been for some time and the Yorkshire last wicket pair didn’t seem at all troubled by it.

Of course had it been a one-day game they would have carried on without question.

Cowley is a poor umpire when weather intervenes and is always looking to get off the field when a cloud appears. 😀😀

I was surprised how far the boundary rope was brought in. Still, a smaller circumference means the club can spend less money on rope.

On a culinary note I was pleased to find the Indian food stall open. It has always been closed on my visits previously – but now it will be open year round as the operators are using it as the kitchen for their take-away business. The server I spoke to expressed some concern about how cold they will be in winter as it’s basically a concrete shed with metal shutters. Still, when the 4-day matches are eventually shunted to November by the ECB, a warming curry will be just the thing.

It was such a shame the commentary was intermittent today. Also, I would like to say that the second catch by Will Smith was brilliant. Pity we couldn’t finish Yorkshire off though.

This business with the forecast for Saturday is a bit confusing but I think it’s because they are now saying it’s uncertain. There is a BIG chunk of rain coming in from the Atlantic which might move across on Saturday, or Saturday night or Sunday. Let’s hope for the latter, assuming we don’t win it in three days …
