Sean Ervine was just 20 runs away from joining an elite group (Poore, CB Fry, Mead, Greenidge & Michael Clark) who have scored three consecutive first-class hundreds for Hampshire. But his dismissal from a superb ball by Sidebottom was the end of Hampshire’s hopes of a decent first innings score. Their last six wickets fell for 23 and since they came into this match a batsman short (Dawson/Wheater) that was perhaps not surprising. I was initially surprised that Carter came in after Crane and Wheal until I saw him bat. Now I’m surprised he was as high as number 11.

Is it the end of their hopes in this match? Probably. And for the season? The other games have been OK from Hampshire’s point-of-view so far, but that’s no good unless they can capitalise. They’re in danger of emerging from this game with four points, in which case things will look grim.

Earlier today, Gareth Berg leads the side off (apart from those who’d already left) after his best-ever figures for Hampshire

Good decision to send Wheater away then!

I keep mentioning these weather forecasts. There has been another tonight on BBC1 which suggests a fair amount of rain on Saturday

I’m just grateful we didn’t loan Ervine to anyone although I suppose there is still time this season.

I have had my suspicions confirmed: Wheater hasn’t been sent – he wants to go. Against all the evidence, he sees himself as a wicket keeper

And while they are saying ‘on loan’, it’s difficult to imagine he’ll ever return, isn’t it? If we look ahead to next season, we have currently two capped batsmen under 30(+) in Vince & Dawson.

We’ve competed in bits with Yorkshire over these two days but not sufficiently – and they have Root, Bairstow, Rashid and Plunkett away with England

Ervine is now top run scorer for Hampshire this season. He has overtaken Wheater and is now on 856. Just 144 runs short of a first 1000 runs in a season. His current best is 976 on 2010.

So, team selection for next game?

I’m going for us to loan Ervine to Kent to boost their promotion chase and to replace him with Monty Panesar who we sign on a short-term loan.

Probably a bit too logical for our management though!
