The September edition of The Cricketer has as its main feature “The 50 Most Influential People in English Cricket”. Three have Hampshire connections. They are at Number 38 Rod Bransgrove, Number 41 Kevin Pietersen, and Number 47 Mark Nicholas.

In the piece about Rod Bransgrove they perpetuate the myth that he “wooed Warne”. He didn’t. That was the previous Chairman Brian Ford, initially at a reception at Buckingham Palace before the 1999 World Cup and before Rod B was formally involved in Hampshire CCC. When Warne arrived in April 2000, Brian Ford was Chairman still, and chaired Warne’s first press conference. I think it might be fair to assume that Warne returned (2004) because of his relationship with Rod B. Rod is also credited in the piece with wooing KP – there again, you can’t win them all.

Most amusing thing was the editor of the Cricketer Simon Hughes putting himself in but leaving out someone like Lawrence Booth editor of Wisden.
