For a couple of very interesting days – with the sun out in Pompey and the Championship and match situations as they are, it’s enough to have me falling back in love with cricket – at least the Championship version of it.

I wonder whether young Tom can go on and match David Turner’s 181*? I fancy we need a decent lead (and more points) but the game – like the others – is fascinatingly poised. We’ve rarely looked capable of taking 20 wickets with our diminished attack but now we have to.

Elsewhere Middlesex and Notts are just about as even as could be, and Durham are battling against Yorkshire – that one could be a draw. I don’t think a draw is much use to us but it’s not hopeless and I’ve suggested the Notts result is irrelevant really, but those two games are intriguing for the title too.

An hour from the close last night, Somerset were winning easily but the Warwickshire ninth wicket resisted very well so who knows? If Warwickshire do lose with a meagre haul of points and we win with a good haul we could overtake them – and put pressure on Lancashire who are fading fast.

Meanwhile I see (with a certain cynical delight) that England’s T20 side – having dropped the man who got three wickets last time out – were stuffed by nine wickets. I hope Liam hits a century and takes 6-10 today!

I’m off to a day of meetings (not cricket) but hoping those of you at the Oval or listening in, have lots of thrills and spills and another good day for Hampshire.

And the last round of matches includes:
Hampshire v Durham
Warwickshire v Lancashire.
So both sides can’t get maximum points in the last match!
