From The Cricketer October 2016:

In their review of the 2016 county season, the magazine has identified the Top Tens for: Best Bowling, Most Economical Bowling, Most Incisive Bowling, Best Averages (Bat & Bowl), Fastest Scorers, Highest Scores, and Leading All-Rounders. Hampshire have just one player among those eighty: Ryan McLaren who is fourth in the All Rounders list.

Only they don’t have him any more:

It would be interesting to know if we wanted to keep him or whether we have other plans for our overseas player.

Or indeed if we have any plans at all.

Wasn’t there an issue about Fidel Edwards having to be ‘overseas’ from 2017?

At the end-of-season dinner (Mark Nicholas one) in the Hilton, the story was McLaren to Lancashire and George Bailey for Hampshire. I didn’t go, but heard that weeks ago . .

Comment by Bob Elliott

Bailey instead of McLaren? Clearly looking to strengthen the Championship bowling then! At the end of last season, Alsop was the most expendable batsman (Taunton). Perhaps, with Bailey at no 3 and Vince playing the whole season, he’ll spend next year in the 2nd XI?

Comment by pompeypop

Yes. Odd if it happens, but the first bit seems to hve happened.

Comment by Bob Elliott

OK but I think Jimmy Adams is out of contract and no Carberry perhaps I hope Alsop will continue to progress to open the innings.
Any news on those out of contract as I also think it applies to Ervine and Wood.
With McLaren gone we need another middle order all rounder as Ervine no longer fills that role.
Take it any signings will be secretive.

Comment by John Cottrell

But hopefully we will notice them once they get on the field John!

Comment by James

Mid season Wood was on the radio saying he’d agreed a one year extension but not signed at that point. The fact that he’s coaching on courses suggests the extension was signed
Mclaren to Lancashire was known at the dinner. Rod said we had two good new signings but wouldn’t be drawn

I wonder whether the reprieve has changed things too? Players who wouldn’t fancy Div 2 will come to Div One. I’d be more excited if I could see that promising youngster from Southampton or Portsmouth coming through – but I guess I’m a bit of a dinosaur.

If Woody has signed why no announcement on our beloved website…..or did miss it…..

Comment by John Cottrell

Doesn’t seem to be any news of McLaren’s departure on the official website (or even Twitter) as far as I can see.

Why do members have to learn these things from external sites?

Comment by James

Because, John and James, the website is the responsibility of the marketing department. Put the cricket section of the site in the hands of the cricket people, and we might get more cricket news

Comment by John West

I do know that John, just being a synic I’m afraid….

Comment by John Cottrell

When I look at other county web sites I usually conclude that they are significantly better than Hampshire’s from a fan (i.e. customer) perspective. One of them this year (I think it was Notts) had made the effort to synchronize the BBC radio commentary.with their static video camera.

The other interesting question is who they sign in terms of their main ambitions. At international level George Bailey is a limited overs specialist …

Comment by pompeypop

Indeed Bill Bailey only played 3 CC games last season.
If he does sign(ed) then if he does not play a lot more CC it will another waste….
