It’s official, Fidel Edwards is returning:

“The West-Indian paceman has re-signed for the 2017 season, in what will be his third season on the south coast.

Fidel Edwards said: “I’m very pleased to return to Hampshire for a third year. The 2016 season was a real disappointment with the injury – especially after everything went so well for me the year before – so I can’t wait for the season to start to get back among the wickets again and try to help the team win.”

It doesn’t say however whether he is now an overseas player or not.

Fidel will still be a Kolpak. Announcement of an overseas player soon. So my source at the Bowl tells me

Wheal and Crane now also signed up to 2019

If they bank on Edwards, Topley, Wheal, Berg, Dawson and Crane to lead the Championship attack, will it be an overseas batsman? There was a suggestion of George Bailey. On the other hand, how much pace cover is there with no McLaren, Tomlinson or (realistically) Ervine? Incidentally if they play all six I identified above, the tail starts at 8, with Berg at 7 (?)

An overseas batting all-rounder who could act as a fourth seamer would seem ideal. Whoever it is lets hope he is available for the majority of the season if not all of it.

Liam had an easy day today . . .

I am told it’s George Bailey – unsure of reliability

Also have Stevenson and Taylor as back up

Would be happy if George (Bill) Bailey is available for all formats and all season. He did not play very much championship cricket this summer.

Stevenson and Taylor back up to who, obviously not “Bill”.

Indeed, Liam did not bat and did not bowl but was in the XI chosen.
