Hampshire Cricket History

Just a couple of years ago, when England were rubbish, Colin Graves took over, sacked Downton and the coach Peter Moores, and installed white-ball enthusiasts Strauss and Bayliss?

Here’s Michael Vaughan this morning: “England’s spinners aren’t as good as India’s, but England’s batting hasn’t been good enough either. They don’t have the patience to bat long enough, to play low-risk strokes.”

Obviously because they play too much Championship cricket. Who should we sack now?

PS Here’s Kohli:

“If you don’t have a good defence in India it’s very difficult to counter the bowling we have. We sensed they don’t have enough faith in the way they go about their innings. We knew it’s only a matter of time, we take a couple of wickets and they crumble quickly. We knew it wouldn’t be long.”

Maybe we should play four-day Championship matches?

Oh no, we tried that

What is now likely to happen with the Football Association and the way it operates also needs to be done with ECB …..

Talking about 4 day cricket I see Hampshire’s September away game against Middlesex has been confirmed as Uxbridge. That completes a thoroughly depressing fixture list.

Yes indeed, really disappointing. We waited all those years for a decent Lord’s fixture and after just one year (and a dreadful performance), it’s back to the countryside – and no, I won’t be going to the T20!

Just the venue for Lancashire away in the CC to be confirmed…

Indeed but we should really be grateful we aren’t playing where we deserve to be – in Division Two!

Congratulations to Tom Alsop on his selection for the England Lions forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka where he is part of both the four-day and one-day squads.

Interestingly Ben Duckett is selected only in the one-day squad. So a player who last month was good enough for our Test team (according to the selectors) can’t even make the Lions four-day squad a month later!

Well done Tom, but the Duckett situation is bizarre. Last night all three pundits on Sky’s Verdict were picking Liam for Friday but it was rather a matter of ‘might as well …’

On a totally different note readers of the blog might be interested in a thirty-minute program broadcast by Radio 4 Extra today where John Arlott talks about the county of Hampshire.

The program was made in 1968 and produced by a David Allen but I suspect not ours unless he was a child prodigy!

The program is repeated at 8.30pm today and available via the BBC iPlayer for a month via this link http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03vztj9
