Bear with me – it becomes relevant:

A few weeks ago I produced a short paper on some research to determine when and if the legendary rock band Cream ever played at a club in Portsmouth. The answer was yes and no – and if it’s of interest I’ll happily explain why.

I circulated the paper among a group of academic music historians, and one replied with this quote from a recent publication by Julian Barnes, which I found absolutely delightful:

“History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation.”

Great quote!
And Cream – yes and no?

It was all about a poster and website showing them appearing at the Birdcage club at Kimbells in October 1966. They didn’t, it was a false trail; but they did play that club in Eastney in December 1966 (I saw it). The discussion was lengthy!
