Hampshire Cricket History

Taking the Plunge

I’ve been mentioning Cricket Archive’s decision to become a pay-site. Well I’ve saved up my pennies and joined, so it will be possible to check out all their wonderful information again.

It costs about a quid a week which I guess is ok for someone like me, although people have been making the point that quite a lot of folks, including me, have over the years added and corrected information. Do we get paid now?

Today I guess Hampshire will hope to finish off the students quickly but I imagine there’s no way they will enforce the follow-on as too many Hampshire batsmen (and tail-enders) need to spend time at the crease. I wonder whether Michael Carberry will sit out the second innings.

And why did a sub take a catch? Do we have a wounded man already?

PLUS: delightful postcard from Bob Elliott of a match between Ex-Servicemen at Chilbolton in 1919. The fact of it happening emphasises the cultural significance of cricket a century ago. What would be its modern equivalent? (not cricket I suspect)

Incidentally Bob has already sold about 60 copies of his delightful new book – well done!

Topley was subbing for Carberry as he is his morning.
Rumour of sore shoulder.

I might be wrong but I was pretty sure that Topley was fielding at the same time as Carbs yesterday……there was a pretty vigourous slapping of hands for a good piece of fielding that left Carbs shaking his right hand for quite a while afterwards……hope that wasn’t what did it!?

Thanks both. I wonder whether Wheal is ahead of Topley for red-ball selection and/or whether Topley’s ‘workload’ is controlled from elsewhere?

There’s a story in the Times today that Moeen Ali will be out of contract next season and while Warwicks are favourites, Hampshire are interested in him.

Did you notice that Basil Akram, who played for our first team in 2015, took the first two Northants wickets for Loughborough Uni yesterday, although then took a lot of stick. He batted today but was out cheaply

Carbs was bowling today!
