Hampshire Cricket History

Matthew Engel (former editor of Wisden) in today’s Guardian, with a focus on County Cricket. It won’t cheer you up, especially if you think & feel as I do, but it’s a very fine piece.

PLUS Lots of Hampshire in today’s Cricket Paper, including features on our most recent Test Match man, a two-page spread on one of our reserves (he’s a spinner too), Rod Bransgrove on … (guess), a photo of Gordon Greenidge, and another two-pages on Hampshire’s Champions of 1973 which concludes with Peter Sainsbury and suggests that “this morning” we hold the legacy of such wonderful old pros “in our hands”.

Huh? Really? Dropped another one then.

Thanks for flagging up the Engel article, somewhat less coruscating than usual, but the title (“The sun sets on county cricket”) says it all.

I wonder if anyone believes the numbers on finance that appear in the article alongside – amazing what you can achieve with a bit of spin!
