Joe Weatherley made a decent start for Kent with a couple of 30s – they won, but Matt Coles was hardly needed.

Adam Wheater is keeping for Essex (no Foster) but was out for just a single in the first innings. He might have to bat very well today to give them a chance against Lancs

Benny Howell couldn’t get in the Gloucs side but their abject performance might offer him an opportunity.

I spent the weekend in London, helping Mrs A who was organising and catering for 130 at a friend’s 70th Birthday. She used to be a caterer and not for the first time I was KP **.

I missed Ryan McLaren who has three wickets for Lancs by tea but failed to score in his one innings. Meanwhile Adam Wheater has gone again for just one – it’s a good job Hampshire kept the ‘keeper who can bat!

And I missed Billy Taylor who umpired the match at the Oval which Surrey won today. Was that his first Championship match?

No I’ve seen Billy stand in a couple of Championship games previously whilst on the reserve list. (This is his first season on the full list).

I think that this is his second season on the full list. His appointment was made at the retirement of another umpire through injury, but was after the cricket bibles (eg Playfair) were published.

Thinking about it that rings a bell Westie. I think you are correct.

To quote an entry on Wikipedia In 2016 Billy was appointed to the ECB’s Full Umpires List.
