Hampshire Cricket History

I’ve had an email advertising tomorrow’s Championship match – “Beefy’s” only gets in as an afterthought!

What is more, as the school holidays come to an end, congratulations to the club for the gesture of allowing under-17s to come in for just £1 – that’s excellent.

PS Tomorrow’s match ends on 24 April (as the cold winds are due) and will mark more than 20% of the Championship season over already.

Apart from occasional University matches, their first-class debut before May arrived, was 24 April 1974, at Lord’s, in the special fixture for the Champion County v MCC

Hampshire’s first-ever Championship match starting in April was v Essex at Dean Park which began on 30 April 1975. They did not play Championship cricket in April regularly until the mid-1980s.

In 1989 they played Championship cricket before the final week of April (20th) for the first time, but they never started a Championship match in the first half of the month until 2005, when their season began on 13 April.

This year they started on 7 April, one day later than their earliest ever start in 2014, which was also their earliest ever at home.

The early season start seems to agree with us. Yet again the first 4batsmen scored over 200. So last season’s batting antics seem to be left behind well and truly. Gotta watch them again!
