29 June: Day Four Under Lights

You guys are doing a fine job of keeping this Blog going, so here’s the final day of the current experiment which I guess – through bad luck – has been a bit of a damp squib.

I’m assuming incidentally that the 2nd XI were waterlogged?

377 all out. Chris Sole a rapid 75!

MCC Universities versus Hampshire 2nd XI:

MCC 1st innings 213/10; Edwards & Topley 4 wickets each.
Hampshire 1st innings 238/5; Carberry 19, Alsop 50, Smith 81, Dickinson 40.

Today is the last day of the match.

Comment by John West

Thanks both. Interesting. Very wet in the south east (Sussex & Hants) but somehow play in Horsham.

Comment by pompeypop

Holland didn’t get to bowl as Dawson and Berg finish off the tail. 147 all out

Comment by Ian

Very sorry Bob – four each for Berg and Holland (Somerset 45-9), and Somerset’s top-scorer a 2nd XI reject from IOW.

I’ve just walked to Southsea and back on what feels like a somewhat dreary mid-October day. I can’t say I’m sorry to be at home now rather than watching at the Ageas Bowl. Could be chilly by 9.30pm …

Comment by pompeypop

20-25 slog get 150 bowl them out for 149!

Comment by Paul

Lots of talk on radio about someone winning this, but it looks like a probable draw to me. Interesting that Rossouw is currently the only Hampshire player with a batting average above 40 …

Comment by pompeypop

Mid-afternoon 2nd XI 164 ahead and MCC Unis at 103-4. Chris Wood bowling more in this game but Chris Sole expensive and wicketless (again?). One each for Edwards, Taylor, Topley & Wood. Salisbury not playing for either Hampshire side (nor Hart)

Comment by pompeypop

The game ended in a draw with an unbeaten 5th wicket partnership, so no more wickets taken. Did Edwards or Topley do enough to replace Wheal next week – what about Crane returning next week? Will Smith or Alsop get a chance?

Comment by pompeypop

Hampshire’s scoring rate the slowest around the country in the first innings and even slower today with 31 from 18. No sign of a rush for victory!

Comment by pompeypop

so surprised was Kevin Baker that when Rossouw
scored his first run he forgot to put it on the board.
when he did there was a rousing cheer.

Comment by John white

Why did an over start at 4.03pm, rather than everyone going off for tea/lunch/dinner/supper/elevenses or whatever?

Comment by pompeypop

The pavilion clock was slow.

Comment by John white

The clock has been slow since 2001….😊

Comment by John Cottrell

Looks like some urgency is being applied.
Ahh Bailey run out!

Comment by Paul

KJ&Co are talking about the light. I wonder if they can go off, in a Day Nighter, for bad light?

If they can’t, it has potentially interesting implications for going off in other games, doesn’t it, where shadows are the issue?

Comment by Jeremy

Presumably they cannot – does the pink ball make the difference?

Comment by pompeypop

I guess they have to claim it does!

I thought what they didn’t like with the Red Ball under lights was that it cast a shadow that created a distracting double image for the batsman? And the Pink Ball has to do the same, and a White one for that matter!

Comment by Jeremy

So are they currently (at 6.15) off for bad light or rain?

Comment by James

88-5 in 34 overs. Scoring rate of just 2.5 an over … and two run outs!

Yet another hopeless batting performance by the first team top order. Since recovering from injury Rossouw now 9 innings, 5 ducks, 56 runs, 83 balls faced, average 6.22 (but up from 4.25 after first innings!).

Meanwhile Alsop scores a fifty and Smith gets yet more runs.

So same batting line up next game? You bet.

Comment by James

Turned out nice again? Dry and reasonably bright in Pompey but surely too much disruption for anything other than a draw now. Pink balls at night a bit of a disappointment then?

Comment by pompeypop

Bright and dry in Pompey so went to the bowl as they was potential potentially. Raining ☔️ rather heavily. Came home bright and dry. The Ageas Bowl and its micro climate strike again.
Something going on at the Hilton best check the cricket pages of the web site to find out what!

Comment by Paul

It’s all gone crazy Paul. Somerset doing their best to lose it – apparently 31 overs for their innings? Their batting looks terribly frail.

Comment by pompeypop

79-6 we should of stayed!

Comment by Paul

Not the only thriller either. Middx collapsed and lost to Essex, Leics lose by just 2 runs as Kleinveldt takes the final wicket. Maybe this pink ball stuff is ok after all?

Comment by pompeypop

I played a match using a pink ball admittedly in daylight could hardly see the ball, lasted about 5 balls 🏏

Comment by Paul

That’s longer than four of Rossouw’s recent innings put together Paul!

Comment by James

It was an enthralling finish……Somerset definitely set off for a positive chase, changed the batting order to put Davies in to open (floodlight batting experience) & it very nearly worked……47 from 40 had our hearts in our mouths.

Then that man Holland came to the rescue…….phew

Brilliant bowling from Gareth Berg & Liam Dawson meant the chase was off, Brad Wheal came on, bowled a maiden, was taken off again! Kyle Abbott bowled a one over spell & took the 8th wicket in the penultimate over. So just two wickets needed from the last over& it really felt like it could happen.

All in all great entertainment………not sure about the pink ball experiment but we definitely got more cricket in this match because of it. We would probably have lost the entire day yesterday to bad light

Comment by joster69

That bad light point is very important Jo – and I’m all for any strategy that keeps them on the field. Astonishingly exciting too – I guess Somerset played their part but they (suddenly) look weak; last year I thought they were as good as any side at the Ageas Bowl. Maybe they should take Tom Alsop on loan …

Comment by pompeypop

or Rilee Rossouw?
