No Alsop! We win the toss and bat. Who will partner Adams? Hint it might be McManus!!!!

Yes McManus. Obvious choice – one innings above 40 all season (41*) first up, months ago. And great to see the in-form Rossouw picked again. I can’t see any reason why Tom Alsop would look to stay at Hampshire – I suspect many counties would love to sign him and with mid-season transfers the thing now, why wait?

Why oh why do we persist with makeshift openers….nothing against Lewis.
The duo of Whites should publicly state why Will Smith is overlooked yet again..as this is now a real joke.

Will not opine on Rossouw yet….

No Sangakarra, bitter sweet if you’re going, as I hope to.

Perhaps because he injured his hand fielding in the one day final?

McManus out to a superb inswinging yorker.

I think him opening was all about accommodating Holland and Crane. Holland has deserved to keep his place and we need the Crane spin option.

The situation with Rossouw is very straightforward. His record demonstrates that he can bat – although maybe not that easily in this country. I’m sure at some point he will get big scores but I doubt whether in the past few decades any Hampshire batsman has endured such a dreadful run and been kept in the first team so why? I think it’s because they won’t admit they might have made a mistake.

Will Smith deserves a chance on 2nd XI form but they probably think he is in the last months of his career so won’t pick him. Alsop needs to bat himself back to form but how poor has he been? He made a half-century v Cardiff University, a century in the 50 over competition, 40 v Yorks in his one Championship innings and another half-century v South Africa A (better than Smith). BUT THE CRUCIAL POINT is it seems he is being added to that long list of kids we bring through and chuck out, and it seems increasingly to me that it’s because we view our own kids with contempt and prefer to pick Aussies (Bailey, Holland), South Africans (Abbott, Berg, and Rossouw) or West Indians (Edwards).

Except as you guys know, it’s not really ‘we’ for me any more. And however good the ball, the decision to open with McManus (a good cricketer) failed.

I can think of a couple of Whites that we should chuck out!

Rossouw’s 28 today is his highest score in his 10 first-class innings since returning from injury. If you’d have given Mervyn Burden or Tom Mottram that many chances up the order they’d have got 28 eventually.
