Hampshire Cricket History

Last Night*

Yesterday’s Guardian article revealed that last year, 72% of T20 sides chose to chase, and 55% of games were won chasing. Hampshire are defying that stat so far.

Also, the average team loses 5.8 wickets per innings, while the average number seven batsman faces just seven balls per innings. So far, Hampshire’s number seven (Berg) has ‘batted’ in one of the two matches but not yet faced. Last night only the first five got in and Ervine was hardly involved until he held the last catch.

So today, Hampshire 2nd XI v Sussex 2nd XI double-header T20 at Newclose; tomorrow Liam. Years ago magazines would publish articles about what cricketers did in the winter (‘Shack’ baked cakes one year). I’m thinking they could publish a similar article now about cricketers like Jimmy Adams in high summer!

*Good one for song titles: Buddy Holly, the Mar-Keys, Little Walter, the Travelling Wilburys (feat Bob Dylan) …

Hampshire won by six wickets with nine balls to spare. A promising young batsman called Alsop scored 68* and Felix Organ 22. Here comes Round 2.

Benny Howell typically doing well for Gloucs in T20 v Kent, although he no longer gets in their Championship side. By contrast neither Adam Rouse nor Joe Weatherley are playing for Kent.

Sussex doing rather better in the second game, on 109-4 with five overs to go, but Brad Taylor (4-0-22-2) has done well again.

Tom Alsop has top-scored again with 33 (so 101 for once out today) but Hampshire getting stuffed this time. Sussex 169-6 (Wood took 2-30), Hampshire 76-5 after 13 overs, Jimmy Adams out twice in single figures.
