Hampshire Cricket History

Fabulous catch from Liam Dawson in the gully to get the first wicket. Maybe he could field in a close catching position for Hampshire?

PS That last comment was of course tongue-in-cheek. At the point when Liam had played 100 first-class matches for Hampshire he averaged 1.2 catches per match (1.19) and only one man in our history had a better catching average in 100+ matches – Barry Richards at 1.29.

Liam is still one of just eight Hampshire players who have played 100+ matches and average better than one per match, but in his past 19 games he’s been sent out to graze and has caught just five catches, so his average is now 1.04 – 126 catches in 121 matches. It seems wasteful to me, especially as Jo has suggested he’s out there because others are too slow

Incidentally can you guess the others averaging better than one per match? The answer is in the first Comment

In average order the eight are Richards, Greenidge, Terry, Barnard, Maru, Eagar, Dawson and Sainsbury.

Dawson is the only one of those who has played his entire career on covered pitches with wickets and therefore chances less frequent, although Terry, Maru and to a lesser extent Greenidge played some/most of their careers under those circumstances.
