The ‘posh’ ‘papers are suggesting Bayliss wants an unchanged squad, although Ballance is not fit, so there must be one change.

As for Liam, and spinners at the Oval – in our last game there, Mason Crane had match figures of 1-222 (deadly double Nelson?)

And speaking of Mason – The Times is suggesting that Dawson won’t go to Australia but Mason will. I’m not sure he’s ready to be one of those ‘fast-tracked’ stars I wrote about yesterday – indeed spinners rarely are – and I’d hate him to be the next Danny Briggs with England. He’s performed very well in recent T20s, but consider his first-class performances since his 5-40 at spin-friendly Taunton, almost eight weeks ago: 3-104 & 2-50 v Warwicks; 0-90 & 0-25 v South Africa ‘A’; 0-89 for England Lions v South Africa and then that game at the Oval.

Meanwhile you might remember that Kent voted neither for nor against the new T-20 City competition. Their Chief Exec, Jamie Clifford, is on the ECB’s executive committee discussing the new domestic structure and is concerned that the new competition threatens a reduction in the current 18-team version. He’s opposed to that reduction – which means what I wonder, if he wins that argument?

PS: A hint? No Liam Dawson in Hampshire’s squad tomorrow; I imagine they will have enquired. Why would England not release him unless he’s going to be retained next week? There might be some interesting reactions from the critics (almost all ex-players).
