Hampshire Cricket History

That’s the name of the game

Teams have just three or four games left and Hampshire stand third. It’s not easy yet to predict anything obvious from this tight group, since even Glamorgan are just four points ahead of a group of teams with a game in hand.

If we assume, even in this volatile period of weather, that everything goes to a win/lose result then Hampshire will be down to fourth by tomorrow night, following the Somerset v Surrey match. It might suit them for Surrey to win narrowly as Somerset have much the better run-rate

Hampshire’s next game is v Glamorgan at home on Thursday and even if they win that they won’t catch the leaders, three points ahead. On the same night Sussex play at Lord’s – will Middlesex have their England players back and turn out a proper team? If not, Sussex should win.

Hampshire’s last two games are v Kent (A) and Somerset (H). Home advantage isn’t working for Hampshire so far with one win in five matches, as against four away wins. Consistent run-scoring down the order seems a problem, since despite a general view that teams are now posting 200 with some regularity, Hampshire’s best is 190 chasing in the defeat at Taunton. Early on Vince and Carberry helped them to winning scores of 188 & 189 v Sussex and Middlesex, but if ‘Carbs’ has done his hamstring he might be out for a while yet.

If I was a commentator I might say “all to play for, in the business end of the season”.

There have been 17 totals this season of 200+ – 11 in the north, six in the south. There have also been a number of 190+ scores, higher than Hampshire’s best.

That’s excellent John, thanks. I missed Arundel earlier this year – I might even go.

You surely don’t expect the Hampshire site to push Beefys, Elfea Spa or the golf course out of way for cricket!

Comment by Paul

Does Beefy’s have Game Bird specials and a free shot with each order?

Another piece of 2nd XI cricket information that you may not know – they are top of the table in the 2nd XI Championship. Information courtesy of CRICINFO.

It is interesting that the BBC, CRICINFO and CRICHQ combined give a host more information about Hampshire Cricket than the Hampshire and ECB websites combined. Perhaps the running of the cricket section of our website should be taken away from the marketing people and given to the cricket people!

I couldn’t agree more John. Our website is a complete disgrace.

More news of our successful 2nd XI T20 campaign on Mike Vimpany’s excellent site

I couldn’t access that yesterday – glad it’s OK because it is excellent. Very pleased if between us we can also keep people up-to-date with 2nd XI etc.

Indeed. maybe Hampshire Corporate Cricket should pay Mike and ourselves for doing their job?
