Hampshire Cricket History

Friday mornings I spend in a local art studio so I’ve been painting away and (2pm) only just caught up

In the (in)famous match in 1992, it was the Essex wicketkeeper who led the recovery, but even then they reached 54-4 before being stuffed …

It seems as though Somerset will lose at the Oval, and at 38-7 Hampshire probably will (!!). If so, the positions and points:

Yorkshire 145

Middlesex 143

Hampshire 140

Somerset 127 (132 if they draw)

It means Hampshire go to Edgabston still in a reasonable position, but if Taunton is a turner and it rains in Birmingham …

Given their last-day escape in 2015, their ‘legislated’ escape in 2016, and their collapse late in this season, would it be difficult to argue that relegation is undeserved?

29 – 6

We’ll be lucky to reach 54.

In case you didn’t get the significance, Neil could also be referring to our all out total v Essex in 1931 – our lowest ever against them

Not there yet now 50-8 amazing what happens when you bowl tight line and length.
Mind there are a noisy team, lots of appeals, oohs and aahs.

Re your last point no. Without Abbott this season we’ve already gone.

Or maybe yes you posed one of those questions were yes and no are right and wrong!
Anyway maybe it is only fair we go down.

A batting masterclass from Edwards, oh dear he’s gone so 76

Comment by Paul

76 equals the lowest total in Div One this season, from just a couple of days ago in the same match.

An absolute disgrace. I was there on Wednesday and thought it a mistake to enforce the follow on as it opened the door for Essex. I said at the time that I thought Essex would probably win now and when Ervine dropped Bopara before he had scored and then again soon after I was even more sure they would go on to win.

However, didn’t imagine it would be quite so humiliating- 20 for the last wicket the highest stand coming from FIdel and Holland!!! Heads should roll after this, right from the top, including all the coaching staff.

I think they deserve to be relegated and Div.3 wouldn’t be out of place if there was one. Team selection for the final match should be interesting. Ervine must go and Weatherley obviously isn’t good enough at this level. Adams, sadly out of touch, Bailey – never a captain and certainly not a motivator, Vince – as usual too casual and so frustrating. Dawson’s batting seems to have deserted him since he has been involved with England.Fidel and Abbott are a liability in the field, as neither likes chasing the ball. Holland is enthusiastic but constantly forgets to gather the ball after stopping it. That doesn’t leave many, just Alsop who kept well for a third reserve keeper and Berg who gives his all and never gives up.

Unfortunately, where are the replacements? Matt Salisbury would have finished off the Essex tail in the 2nd innings which those chosen couldn’t do but they won’t pick him as he only plays Essex league cricket!! As do S.Cook, who no-one had heard of before this match, and , of course, Porter who has been superb all season.

The only up-side, Dave, is that we were right in our nomination for the Society’s ‘Player of the Season’ i.e. no-one!

Sorry if I’ve gone on a bit but needed to have a good rant- I have to face the Essex locals tomorrow.
