Hampshire Cricket History

Almost There

It’s difficult to see how Somerset v Middx will be a draw, in which case, unless Hampshire contrive to lose this game, they are already safe.

It’s almost 3pm. On Tuesday lunchtimes, my Southsea Skiffle Orchestra performs in Pompey Guildhall and one of our regular followers is a serious Hampshire fan, so he came with news of early wickets in both games that suited Hampshire. It seems a pretty satisfactory day so far.

Thanks for other news (below). The ‘old guard’ on its way (more?) but the ‘new guard’?

PS Seven hours later, it’s hard to believe I shared his optimism and wrote that (above). What a shocking afternoon that was.

There’s a suggestion that Crane is rusty – he has bowled TWO first-class overs in the past seven weeks, despite being fit, so it’s hardly surprising!

Sibley was or wasn’t caught, but it did not make a big difference as he only added eight runs – although Crane missed a wicket and soon after another, when Alsop missed a stumping.

I don’t think we will hear about the “new guard” until the end of the South African domestic season.

Will Smith is returning to Durham! What a load of morons we have running Hampshire Cricket. Will was one of the best signings we have made from another county in recent times, and we cannot, or do not want, to keep him. I am just waiting for Kyle Abbott to realise what he has let himself into, and he departs, and Mason realises that he should be at Sussex. I am not sure where the removal van is going to take me for next season!!!!!!

Comment by John West

Mason might be better off emigrating to Australia.

Comment by Ian White

I can think of a few he should take with him if he does!

Hold the front page, we are 13/2. We still need another 4 points.

Jimmy Adams made a century at the Oval weeks ago since when in five matches he has scored 12, 14, 2, 0, 1 & 3. Hampshire doing their best to make the end of the season exciting!

Comment by pompeypop

Make that 13 for 3

Comment by Tigger MIles

Morale must be a mile deep!

Comment by John West

We are in serious threat of going down. Can’t see where the 4 points are coming from. Maybe a 5 point deduction for Somerset is our only hope.

Comment by Tigger MIles

I don’t believe Somerset will or should be fined. Anthony Gibson said yesterday that Taunton tends to flatten out and that seems to be the case. Neither do I believe that Hampshire should survive again through some ‘judicial process’. The batting is shocking and as John says, morale must be awful. But the answers are impossible to figure – it seems a real mess (93-7 now).

Comment by pompeypop

I agree about Somerset. Just saying that looks to be our best (or only) chance.

Hampshire made stacks of runs at the Oval but who doesn’t? Since then their innings have been: 224, 290, 146, 254, 76 and (today) 97-7.

Thrilled that I’ve just received a special offer from the Ageas Bowl offering me suits from £800. That’s more than I’ve spent on suits in my life.

Comment by pompeypop

Call me old fashioned, but I wouldn’t trust someone to make me a suit who can’t even manage to spell their own address right! (or perhaps our marketing muppets are even crapper at their jobs than “our” cricketers?).

Says it all

Humiliated by the bottom of the table team. If we bowl Warwickshire out for 50 in their second innings I wouldn’t be on us getting the runs.

Have our players no pride at all?

Comment by James

bet on us getting the runs that should say!

“Almost There” – almost relegated.

Comment by Dave Pople

A turnaround still possible, or if not if the effect at Taunton is to ease the pressures on Middlesex batting a second time and to frustrate Somerset, match drawn there would have the same ending.

Comment by stephenfh

Taunton rain at 2/3 pm tomorrow.

Straws…clutching.

Sigh…just cant believe today.

Comment by Nick Jenkins (@nickjenkins01)

Sadly Nick after last week’s capitulation it was all too inevitable.

Craig White quoted tonight as saying “Now we have to come out and show our character”. It seems to me they’ve been doing that for weeks.

Ouch !
