Tigger asks about our ‘overseas’ player. We have Roussow, Abbott and Edwards of course, but none strictly overseas, so we can replace Bailey. Will we go for a 4-Day man or put our money on a white ball trophy? Will we get bits & pieces guys through out the season?
So, the first first XI? In the Championship? Assuming all fit and available and based on policy last season:
Adams, Weatherley or Alsop, Vince, Northeast, Rossouw, Dawson, McManus, Berg, Abbott, Edwards plus one from Wheal, Holland and Crane
Who did I miss from the ‘possibles’? Taylor, Organ, Hart ….
So what do we need most from an overseas guy, to add to that lot?

What about Topley!
Comment by John L February 22, 2018 @ 8:51 amAnd Ervine
Comment by John L February 22, 2018 @ 8:55 amOops – sorry. ‘Freudian’ slips? Two years ago I forgot to include Topley in my last Handbook; maybe it’s all been my fault – some of you will recall a saga last year, when they copied my files and left him out again. I think the signing of Northeast makes Ervine less sure of a place, assuming he’s not going to open. But I just forgot them.
Comment by pompeypop February 22, 2018 @ 12:27 pmLet’s show, confidence in what we’ve got.
Comment by John white February 22, 2018 @ 9:05 amI was impressed by Holland last season and he looks like a hugely promising all-rounder coming up with a vital decisive innings on the last day of last season to ensure safety. His medium pace bowling too looked very useful. He should challenge Dawson/Ervine for that all-rounder position.
Comment by Peter Jeffs February 22, 2018 @ 10:48 amI totally agree about Holland. He seems to have something about him and I hope he is given ample opportunities to develop further.
The first thing i would look for in a potential overseas signing is integrity.
Comment by James February 22, 2018 @ 12:07 pmHolland did seem promising but I can’t see him competing with Ervine for an all-rounder slot because Ervine really doesn’t bowl any more. If Holland replaced Dawson they’d probably go in without a spinner. I can’t see Dawson being omitted.
Comment by pompeypop February 22, 2018 @ 12:31 pmBut we can play two all-rounders – Holland and Dawson.
Or three – Holland, Dawson and Abbott.
Or even four – Holland, Dawson, Abbott and Berg!
Comment by James February 22, 2018 @ 1:57 pmBetween us we have mentioned the whole first team squad except Stevenson and Dickinson, that is according to the squad on The HCCC website.

Don’t understand why Dickinson isn’t on the site, have I missed something?
I note that Organ is only in the Academy list along with another Organ, brother I suspect.
Comment by Tigger MIles February 22, 2018 @ 10:55 amI suspect we will announce an overseas player at some point, possibly a bowler!!
Silly me for trusting the Ageas Site. They were quick enough to add Northeast (albeit without a photo) but no sign of our new Player Development Manager under Coaching Staff even though it was announced in mid-Jan.
Comment by Tigger MIles February 22, 2018 @ 11:27 amIt seemed to me that the Barbados trip suggested that Dickinson isn’t certain to be deputy ‘keeper’. Last year he showed promise as a quick-scoring white ball batsman – but not on this recent trip. As for Stevenson, less likely to appear than Topley perhaps?
Comment by pompeypop February 22, 2018 @ 12:29 pmFraser Hay is another missing from the “official” squad. There is a lot of inconsistency in the county’s announcement of renewed contracts/releases.
Comment by Ian White February 22, 2018 @ 5:05 pmHe’s generally been the overseas ‘pro’ at Portsmouth and played for the 2nd XI (he’s an Aussie). I’m not sure he was ever a contracted Hampshire player (?)
Comment by pompeypop February 22, 2018 @ 9:21 pmHe had a summer contract last year.

Cheers James. The last line is key. Hampshire might soon have an entire side of players born around the ‘Empire’ plus one Yank!
