Thanks to James for spotting that Reece Topley will be our first white ball only player (Chris Wood?) – see also, below, Stephen’s comment. From the BBC:

“England and Hampshire seamer Reece Topley will play white-ball cricket only in 2018 following two seasons of injury problems. The club and Topley consulted with the England and Wales Cricket Board who advised the left-armer to manage his workload as part of his rehabilitation. The 24-year-old has not played since July 2017 after suffering a recurrence of a stress fracture in his back.”

Makes it slightly odd then that he did not go to Barbados (?)

Think we’re going to need a red ball seamer. We’ve lost a few the last 2 years (Salisbury, Tommo, Mclaren, Best, Wainwright, Carter). In for Morkel or do we go with the youngsters – Chris Sole, Asher Hart, Ryan Stevenson?

Maybe they’ll go in that direction for an overseas signing although they have Abbott, Edwards, Wheal and Berg at least – and Topley has not been playing.

Well of that list we never really found Salisbury, wished we hadn’t found Best and Carter, replaced McLaren with Abbott and Wainwright was a slow left armer so I would say Tommo is our only real seam bowling loss along with Ervine who doesn’t really bowl nowadays.

I have high hopes of Holland as I did of Stevenson before all his injuries and Wheal has also looked promising There also seems little point having Hart & Sole on the staff if they aren’t given a chance so I think we probably have enough to be going on with.

Is he the first? In my opinion no as we have had signings before who played only in T20 or List A cricket.

Maybe , but wasn’t that always either for contractual reasons (Afridi) or because they didn’t get picked (Mitchell Stokes)? This is a case of someone signed on a full contract, stipulating that he’s not playing red ball – albeit different from Hales and Rashid who have chosen to opt out, whereas Topley, like Mills (Sussex) isn’t fit enough to play all formats. It would be interesting to work through Tigger’s list and spot all those who never played first-class and ask why. In fact, as I’m just back from a shopping expedition …

He’s been in Doha and Dubai watching girlfriend Elina Svitolina in the tennis and using the ICC facilities for preseason

Thank you.

I still think we will sign an overseas seamer.
