‘Cally’ RIP

I’m very sorry to hear of the sudden death of Dave Callaghan who was Yorkshire’s ‘Kevan James’. In my time working on Solent with Kevan, I shared commentary with ‘Cally’ a few times, including a memorable three days at Headingley during which I left my stint with a lead wrapped round my leg and pulled everything off the desk!

He was completely calm and forgiving, even let me do more. He was a lovely bloke and will be missed.

Couldn’t agree more. Maybe it was all those endless updates for all the Yorkshire local radio stations that did for him! Will miss listening to him.

I think it was during last seasons Hampshire match at Headingley early season that we won when he was commentating that he quipped that Dave Townend (a fellow commentator) was the sort of bloke that if you leant him £500 you wouldn’t be too sorry if you never saw it again! Made me chuckle at the time. RIP Cally

I too was enormously sad to hear the sad news of Cally’s death this morning. It was always a delight to tune in to Radio Five Live’s Championship commentary and discover he was one of the commentators.

He was always cheerful and very fair and generous in his comments about both sides. He seemed a very decent man and will be sadly missed.

RIP Cally.

I always enjoyed listening to Dave’s commentaries on 5 Live Extra and my one great memory of him was from the 2016 Middlesex v Yorkshire Championship decider.

The fact that Lord’s are not allowed to use their floodlights for daytime games, only for evening games which the council approve in advance, was brought up.

This lead to a discussion about the whole issue of using floodlights during daytime games rather than going off for bad light.

Various points were raised and one of the commentators raised the issue of entertaining the paying public.

Dave then said, possibly a bit ironically,

“This isn’t entertainment, this is county cricket”
