Run out, again (by Root – but diving?)

27 or thereabouts, again. OK I guess

Here, from Bloggy, is the Essex Travelling Scoreboard

Essex Scoreboard 0011 (1)

I suspect I could find that match (Sussex 156, Essex 177-5)

Ilford, May 1962: Sussex 156 (Preston 5-36); Essex 311-7 dec (Bailey 124*, Knight 89); Sussex 71-6. Match drawn. There was rain on day two – lost about half the day.

I have a newspaper photo of Essex at Pompey that year signed by most of the Essex players.

I see that scoreboard shows average runs per over. Were there bonus points awarded for faster scoring then? I can’t think why the scoreboard would show it back then.

Yes indeed. My memory is of two points for first innings lead plus two more if you managed that faster than your opponents. Whether that calculation was at the point of taking the lead, or overall in the innings, I can’t remember. You did not get ‘faster’ points, if behind on first innings.

Pocket calculators came along in the 1970s so average runs per over worked out by hand or as a piece of mental arithmetic at times maybe. It looks like it took a bit of operating as well.

If only they had another lorry at the end of the ground they would have a “fully integrated scoreboard system”.
