Hampshire Cricket History

Has this ever happened before? England have omitted Malan who holds some slip catches and drops others, but despite being on top v India they have dropped three more chances today. The strangest thing though is that Buttler has dropped two and caught two – both catches the ball after the drop. Nonetheless three drops in fewer than 25 overs isn’t great.

Meanwhile, 40 minutes before ‘kick off’ in Cardiff, there is no team news on the Hampshire website. It’s on the ‘telly’, although the Test is likely to overlap – for James there’s Poirot in Death on the Nile; unless he’s a gardener like Mrs A, in which case there’s Monty.

PS: There is a rumour that this has been a fine summer, but Sussex & Kent have both had four T20 matches abandoned with no result – the latest today. If Hampshire had lost three more to rain, they might still be in contention! Interesting too, that while no side lost four games abandoned last year, Sussex were worst hit in either division with three. In 2016, no side lost more than two (Glamorgan). So 2018 will go down as a rubbish summer!

They’re unchanged – and batting.

‘Contrariwise’ continued Tweedledee, ‘if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be; but as it isn’t, it ain’t. That’s logic.’

Before this evening, Liam Dawson was Hampshire’s only batsman averaging above 30. Now he’s not.

Looks like we moved above Essex by virtue of not playing – they’ll now go above us by not playing!

But we’re ahead Bloggy! After eight overs, Hampshire 90-2; Glamorgan 82-1. We must be winning …

Comment by pompeypop

Hmmm – seems we lost again. How did that happen?

Hmmmm…look at the table Mr P. Pop

All our concerns about the bowling, with Crane, Topley and Taylor out, but again it’s the batting – despite a good start – that’s let us down

Bloggy notes the batting problem. Perhaps Ervine and Adams would have made a difference (?) but they won’t next year and there’s no-one in the 2nd XI making a clear case for promotion, so what’s to be done? I wonder whether Jimmy will return for the Championship although if he’s going to start teaching in September (is he?) he won’t play much more.

Liam Dawson still tops Hampshire’s batting averages but across the country he’s 66th in the list, with only Munro (80th) ahead of Northeast in 119th place. Only two bowlers are in the top 50 – Munro who is 28th and Steyn, 44th, after two games. Together they constitute one overseas player. The two spinners have good economy rates (both just over seven) but in 20 games between them they’ve taken just 14 wickets.

The last I heard regarding Jimmy (a few months ago) was that he hadn’t made a final decision regarding retirement and he might continue next year if he was in good form this season. He also hinted that it wasn’t definite he would go into teaching.

Having said that he has had a few good days in the Championship along with a number of bad ones like most of our batsmen and has been ignored for the T20 and the One Day Final so i suspect he will indeed call it a day in September.

Oh and thanks for the Poirot option but the athletics was very entertaining!

Cheers James – interesting. Glad the athletics were ok! I managed to avoid Hampshire (I’ve seen enough!)

Jimmy is seventh in Hampshire’s Championship averages with one century and one fifty in 14 innings – but those above include Amla, Berg & Holland. Of those who remain, he’s behind Vince, Rossouw & Weatherley. He seems to be scoring well for St Cross.

Comment by pompeypop

Indeed I meant to mention that Jimmy has scored 121 not out, 148 and 82 in his last three league games for St Cross.

Correct me if I am wrong Dave but I thought the team was not announced until the toss 30 minutes before the start, or do you mean squad details, as I thought they were there, as that shows as having been posted on the website the day before (9th August).

You’re quite right Martin. I guess I just couldn’t find them. Apologies (and to Hampshire!)
