Surrey have won, and are Champions (well deserved).

For Hampshire to be mathematically safe following Surrey’s victory they need 11 points from their last two matches, because they are ahead of both Lancashire & Worcestershire on tie-breaks. But Hampshire only need 11 points if Worcestershire take 48 from their last two matches. Every point Worcs drop, is one less required by Hampshire.

How likely are the struggling teams to get 24 points? In the past 16 Division One matches, only two sides have taken the full 24 points from the game – despite 13 ending in victories with only one draw and one tie.

If you exclude the match at Headingley that was abandoned without a ball bowled, then both Div One & Div Two now average 20% drawn matches, with two rounds to go. I’ve looked randomly over more than 100 years and cannot find any season when that figure was lower.

Only the top two have done better than Hampshire’s three home wins in the Championship so far.

There have only been 5 occurrences of 24 points in Div 1. Surrey have done it 3 times, Worcs once and Essex against us.
