I’ve just had a phone conversation with a Hampshire fan pal of mine – one of the regular autograph hunters – and he told me one of two bits & pieces which he’s picked up – I need to stress I knew/know nothing but here goes:
Kyle Abbott has expressed an interest in returning to the South African side – since post-Brexit he would have to play as one of our overseas players this could happen, but his availability for the county would then depend on South Africa’s commitments from April-September.
(Restrictions imposed today increase the difficulties of people travelling from South Africa to the UK – might that also impact on Brad Wheal?)
Hampshire still hope to sign Aussie spinner Nathan Lyon but only for white ball cricket
Hampshire are apparently leading the chase to sign New Zealand’s 26-year-old all-rounder Kyle Jamieson. He has a Test batting average in six matches of 56.50 and 36 wickets at just 13.27.
As I say, I know nothing (and have read nothing) – maybe you do?

South Africa would be foolish not to include Abbott in their team? I like the idea of having the NZ batsman who can bowl a little bit. Cannot have enough test quality men! Still would like a solid opener though.

Jamieson has made a wonderful start to international cricket although he is 26 so not a real youngster. I think he is more of a bowling all-rounder. At 6’8″ he gets a fair bit of bounce without seemingly being express pace. Like a young Joel Garner or Curtly Ambrose so I’d love to see him join us!.
Comment by James January 8, 2021 @ 1:56 pmHaving said that, Jamieson looks excellent from what little I have seen of him, and his Test and FC bowling averages are exceptional. Still think we need a batsman though.
