Joe Root has batted wonderfully well and was a bit unlucky (or tired) when he was dismissed from what was then the final ball of Day Three. You might have heard that he was poised to become the second England batsman to score double centuries in back-to-back Test Matches. The first was Wally Hammond who was born in Kent, played for Gloucestershire’s but also spent a couple of early teenage years at Portsmouth Grammar School where there is a photo of him batting in scruffy gear at Hilsea.

He will never get anywhere with a bat like that!

I once showed one of Roy Marshall’s bats to Nic Pothas who said much the same thing!!

One of the changes I would love to see in cricket is to restrict the weight of bats to encourage timing and lessen the effects of slogging.

But then I’m getting old I suppose.
