The Fabulous Five

Holland (2), Alsop (2), Northeast, Vince & Dawson – five centurions, seven centuries in our first three matches/four innings, and maybe more to come.

Tigger informed us last week that this was a record and took us back to a few other years, including in the early 1990s when we had centurions against Oxford University.

But we exclude those first-class friendlies (which are first-class no more)? What if we look as this year, just at the first three Championship games?

1990: Kent x 3 (Terry Middleton, James); Sussex x 2 (Gower & R Smith); Surrey x 1 (R Smith) = 6

1992: Sussex x 3 (Terry, Middleton, R Smith); Yorkshire x 1 (James); Surrey x 2 (Terry, Middleton) = 6

Although note that in 1990 the first five were all different.

Incidentally, it didn’t stop there. After the third game:

1990: Essex x 2 (Middleton, C Smith); Yorkshire x 1 (Marshall), Leics x 1 (Marshall)

1992: Lancs x 1 (Middleton + James 98); Durham x 0; Yorkshire x 1 (Gower).

Below, Alsop hitting Brathwaite through the covers – and continuing today:
