What a fantastic performance by New Zealand today. It seemed that India should never have given them a sniff but that’s not how it worked out. No big scores, no big totals, terrific cricket.
Mind you they have a real advantage don’t they? I mean there are almost as many people in their country as live in Yorkshire. My favourite stat of the day is that since 2014 they have selected 38 players in Tests, fewer than any other country (England? 64). There might be a lesson there?
PS: I’m not checking (yet) but I guess it’s the first six-day match ever played in Hampshire

Comment of the day came from Danish Kartik: upon a view of the NZ fans in the crowd celebrating Simon Doul said ‘that’s a town in NZ’, DK replied ‘that’s a family in India’ – couldnt stop laughing to that! Great advert for test cricket considering the amount of time lost – ok they had an extra day. Perhaps that’s something that could be the way forward to get more results??
Comment by Stephen Anstey June 23, 2021 @ 5:58 pmExcellent match and well done to the Hampshire Bowl, Simon Lee and Winston the dog! Lot of work now to turn it back into the Ageas Bowl before Saturdays T20I
Comment by John L June 23, 2021 @ 5:59 pmNew Zealand showed that if you stick to your strengths & don’t drop your catches there is always a chance to turn an almost certain draw into a win. Congratulations to them & a fabulous day for those that could attend today
Comment by joster69 June 23, 2021 @ 6:38 pmDuring the TMS coverage one of the commentators (think it was Simon Mann) mentioned that Devon Conway would be returning to the Bowl as he had signed for the Southern Braves (sic). Perhaps you could make a complaint about this serious error.
Comment by Colin Price June 23, 2021 @ 8:21 pmWell I could Colin …
Comment by Dave Allen June 23, 2021 @ 8:23 pmI echo all those comments. I was lucky enough to attend yesterday, having also been there on Saturday. A fantastic advert for Test cricket, played in great spirit with a brilliant atmosphere, created by the Indian and New Zealand supporters. New Zealand certainly don’t drop there catches and well done to them, not forgetting Simon Lee and his team in difficult circumstances with the weather on the first 4 days.
Comment by Martin June 24, 2021 @ 9:49 amSimon Lee has had a really tough start to his time with Hampshire but seems to have done a really fine job. Let’s hope things get easier now.
Comment by Dave Allen June 24, 2021 @ 11:54 amIt was fantastic effort by the New Zealand team who are a total credit to their country, to the game and to sport in general.
They accepted victory yesterday just as they had in winning the recent series against England and in losing the very controversial World Cup Final two years ago – with grace and dignity.
I hope others watch and learn but I suspect they won’t.
Comment by James June 24, 2021 @ 11:23 amJust seen this Dave. Made me think of all the chat about Hambledon earlier in the season. Could it help with your Hambledon end campaign??
That’s lovely – thank you Angela. I’ve pinched the photo (!!) and sent a reply with the 2021 information. Cheers!
Comment by Dave Allen June 24, 2021 @ 5:38 pmThere was a feature on the Big Screen during the rain/bad light break on Saturday talking to Simon Lee about “behind the scenes at Hampshire” and it included pictures and a brief chat about Broadhalfpenny Down, being the cradle of cricket. I thought it was good publicity for Hampshire and Hambledon.
